| Olivenhain, settled by German immigrants in 1884, cherishes its rural outlook and small town feel. Located adjacent to Rancho Santa Fe, the area's agricultural industry yielded to a residential community in the 1950s. Olivenhain is named after the German word for “olive grove”.
Olivenhain homes are upscale and housing typically consists of custom homes built on large lots with beautiful gardens. The residents enjoy a mild climate that is conducive for cultivating a variety of fruits and vegetables, and many of them are avid gardeners who grow fruit orchards containing citrus and avocado trees. Owning and breeding horses is also a favorite pastime of locals.
The open fields and hillsides were subdivided into spacious lots that today hold large custom homes often with horse facilities.
Olivenhain also has prestigious schools, both public and private. The public schools are overseen by the Encinitas Union School District. Many young families settle down in Olivenhain for its popular schools, laid back lifestyle, and the unique beauty and tranquility of the countryside.
